Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about downloading the app, connecting your DoorLink, and using it day to day.

1. What Is DoorLink?

What is DoorLink?

DoorLink is a small device you place at your entrance, connected to the DoorLink app on your phone. When a visitor — a delivery driver, a guest, anyone — taps their phone against it, you get an instant notification and can talk to them by video call, voice, or text, even if you're not home.

Do I need to buy DoorLink?

No. DoorLink is provided on loan through your service provider — you don't purchase the device outright. It remains linked to your account for as long as you use the service.

2. Getting Started: The App

How do I download DoorLink?

Search for "DoorLink" in the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and install it like any other app.

How do I create an account?

Open the app and choose one of two options:

To create a new account, enter your first name, last name, email address, and a password, then submit to register. Once registered, sign in with your email and password.

3. Connecting Your DoorLink Device

How do I link my DoorLink device to my account?

After signing in, tap Install Device. Follow these steps:

  1. Allow location access. The app will ask permission to use your location — choose "Allow While Using the App."
  2. Tap Next on the "Get your DoorLink" screen.
  3. Tap Scan on the "Register the device" screen.
  4. Hold your phone close to your DoorLink device so it can read the NFC tag.
  5. A checkmark appears once the device is successfully connected — your DoorLink is now linked to your account.

What do I do once it's connected?

Install the physical device at your entrance, then return to the Home screen in the app. You're now ready to receive visitor notifications.

4. Where to Install Your DoorLink

Where should I place the device?

Install DoorLink at the outside entrance of your home — anywhere a visitor (such as a delivery driver) would naturally stop, so they can tap their phone against it to reach you.

I live in an apartment building. Where does it go?

If you share a building entrance with other residents, DoorLink needs to be placed where visitors first arrive — for example, the shared street-level entrance — rather than on your individual apartment door. Visitors need physical access to the device for it to work, so it won't be useful mounted somewhere they can't reach.

5. Using DoorLink

Does a visitor need the DoorLink app?

No. A visitor doesn't need to download anything or create an account. They simply unlock their phone and tap it against your DoorLink device. This opens a quick screen where they can enter their name and reach you — by call, video, or message.

What happens when someone taps my DoorLink?

You'll get a notification on your phone letting you know someone is at your door. From there, you can:

During a video call, you can switch between your front and back camera.

Can I leave instructions for visitors in advance?

Yes. In the app, under "Your current note," you can set a status (for example, "In Home") and write a short instruction for visitors — such as "Call me," "Text me," or "Leave it with my neighbor." Visitors will see this note when they tap your device.

Example scenario: a delivery driver arrives. The driver taps their phone against your DoorLink. You receive a notification and a call. You can answer by video, reply with a quick text, or — if you'd set instructions in advance — the driver may already see your note on what to do (e.g. where to leave the package).

6. Managing Your Household

Can other people in my home also get notified when someone taps DoorLink?

Yes. From the Home screen, tap Manage Household to add other members. Tap the + button to add someone new — you can have up to 5 members per household.

How do I add a household member?

Enter their email address. They must already have a DoorLink account (be registered on the platform) before you can add them. When adding them, you also assign their role: Owner, Member, or Guest.

What's the benefit of adding household members?

When a visitor — for example, a delivery driver — taps your DoorLink, the notification and call go out to all household members, not just one person. Anyone in the household can answer.

Can multiple household members join the same video call?

Not yet. Right now, only one person can join the video call with the visitor at a time. Support for multiple household members joining the same call together is in development.

7. Privacy & Data

What personal information does DoorLink collect?

When you create an account: your email, a securely hashed password, display name, and optionally your phone number and profile photo. To enable notifications and calls, DoorLink also collects your device type and push notification tokens, and — for your registered device — the DoorLink's unique ID. Call history (timestamps, duration, and status) and any messages you or a visitor send are stored as well. Visitors who contact you through the web app only provide the name they choose to enter; their video and audio during a call are transmitted live and are not recorded or stored.

Is my video or audio call recorded?

No. Video and audio are transmitted directly between you and the visitor in real time (via WebRTC) and are never recorded, stored, or analyzed by DoorLink.

Is my data sold or used for advertising?

No. DoorLink does not use your data for advertising, ad targeting, behavioral profiling, cross-app tracking, or sell it to third parties. Data is only used to run the service itself (notifications, calls, account and device management, security).

How long is my data kept?

Data type Retention
Call history 90 days
Visitor messages Per household settings (default: 90 days)
Push notification tokens Removed after 90 days of inactivity
Security audit logs Up to 1 year
Video / audio Never stored — real-time only

How do I delete my account and data?

In the app, go to Settings (the same screen where you log out) and tap Delete Account. Confirm with your password. This immediately revokes your active sessions, deactivates your household memberships and notifications, and removes your personal data (name, phone number, profile photo). This cannot be undone.

You can also request deletion by emailing privacy@doorlink.io from your account's email address, with the subject line "Account Deletion Request." Requests are completed within 30 days. Some records, such as security audit logs, may be retained for up to a year where legally required.

For full step-by-step instructions, see the Delete Your Account page.

What are my privacy rights?

Under GDPR, you can request access to your data, correct it, delete it, receive it in a portable format, restrict or object to its processing, or withdraw consent at any time. Contact privacy@doorlink.io for any of these requests — you'll get a response within 30 days. For full details, see our Privacy Policy.
